The Call to Adventure

Abhi’s enterprise ran like a fleet of ships scattered across oceans: data centers on one coast, edge devices in remote warehouses, and workloads moored in more than one public cloud. Incidents arrived like storm warnings. Compliance demanded visibility, developers wanted a consistent ship-to-prod path, and the business wished to AI at the edge… yesterday.

At the strategy council, Captain Arc arrived with a sextant and a star map.

“You don’t need to move all ships to one port,” he said. “Bring Azure to your ships.”

He pointed to a constellation where each star represented a non-Azure resource registered in Azure, including servers, Kubernetes clusters, SQL databases, and even VMware estates. Abhi registers existing Linux/Windows servers and Kubernetes clusters from on-prem, edge, and other clouds with Azure Arc. Immediately, they show up in the Azure portal with tags, RBAC, and policy compliance.

  • AKS enabled by Arc for containerized apps with GitOps
  • Data services on Arc (e.g., Arc-enabled SQL) for consistency and governance
  • Azure-connected operations: Backup, Site Recovery/DR patterns, Update management, Monitoring
  • Disconnected operations at sites with poor connectivity (keep business-critical apps alive until the link returns)

With policy as maritime law, baseline configurations stay compliant. When the AI team needs GPUs at the edge, the harbor master scales the cluster and pushes containers via GitOps. Developers ship features without caring whether a workload runs on a ship at sea or in the harbor — the experience feels the same.
